A Letter From Arnold Palmer

Quite simply referenced as “The King”, the great Arnold Palmer transformed the game of golf.

A letter from Arnold

Buon pomeriggio amici!

Come siamo tutti??

Eccezionale!!

So let’s begin…….

For those of you that are somewhat behind, we are now in 2025, I know, I know that sounds like crazy talk but it’s not, it’s true.

What is crazy talk is some of the events of 2024, for a start I didn’t win the British Open nor the National Lottery, come to think of it nor the Euro Lottery and I really did feel that I was sure to win one of the three at least.
Now it is not like me but we are going to have to get a little sentimental for a moment.

We lost a lot of very special people back in 2016 and one of whom was quite arguably the most influential golfer of all time……

and quite simply called “The King”.

Arnold Palmer transformed the game of golf.

With his handsome cowboy looks and his “off the scale” charisma he became one of the most popular and well known sportsman we have ever known. He developed such a following at the tournaments he played in that his fans developed their own nickname….. “Arnie’s Army”.
Let me tell you something.. I was once part of “Arnie’s Army”.
My father, John, was an incredible tennis player, a massive sports fan, a massive golf fan and a huge Arnold Palmer fan. On the occasions that Arnie made it to the UK, my father would make an effort to watch him live whether it was at the British Open or at Wentworth. To my dad, John, it was like going to watch a Rock Star. When I was young, I was taken to be a part of it and it changed the future of myself and my sister forever!
At a young age, we fell in love with the game. We were blessed to have the ability to become quite good at the game of golf and we both went on to become Professionals, although I was never quite as talented as my older sister, Lisa!
Upon my Father’s retirement some years ago, he decided to write to the great man himself, “the King” and thank him for the fantastic influence he had on himself and his two children, myself and Lisa.
Being the great man that he was, Arnold Palmer replied in person, and I still have the original letter which myself and sister Lisa are obviously very proud of.
Arnold was typically humble, stating that he was flattered about his influence on the life of myself and sister and both generous, wishing my father John, lots of birdies in his retirement. This is the original letter….

Arnold Palmer was a true superstar, a true sporting legend and a true gentlemen and we sadly lost him in 2016.
My family also sadly lost my father in 2016 and myself, my sister, Lisa and our mother like to think that my father John and Arnold Palmer are now having lots of birdies together although I hazard a guess Arnold would have to give my Dad a few shots here or there!!! Until next time, kindest regards, Robert Walton
